Where to Eat in Ilfracombe: Our Favourite Restaurants (2026)

Ilfracombe is quietly becoming one of the best places to eat on the North Devon coast. Here's where we send our guests — from Michelin-listed fine dining to the best fish and chips in town.

For a small seaside town, Ilfracombe has a genuinely impressive food scene. Fresh fish landed at the harbour that morning, a Michelin-listed restaurant on Fore Street, Damien Hirst's restaurant overlooking the boats, and a string of independents that would be talked about in any city. It's a food lover's town hiding in plain sight.

We host guests at FluidHome, our holiday apartment in the heart of Ilfracombe, and food recommendations are one of the most common things people ask us about. Here's the honest list — the places we'd eat at ourselves, not just the ones with the biggest TripAdvisor profiles.

1. The Antidote

The special occasion one. A tiny, intimate restaurant with just six tables, tucked away near the harbour on St James Place. The Antidote is run by Paul and Sarah — he cooks, she runs the room — and together they've created something genuinely special. It's listed in the Michelin Guide and ranked among the top restaurants in Ilfracombe on every platform going, and it deserves every bit of praise.

The set menu changes regularly, built around the best local and seasonal produce Paul can find. Dishes are modern British with real invention — beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and served in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. The glass-fronted room with brown paper-covered tables has a cool, modish feel that's a world away from stuffy fine dining.

Our tip: Book well ahead — with only six tables, it fills up fast, especially weekends. Sarah mixes an excellent Negroni to start the evening. Don't miss it.

2. The Terrace Tapas and Wine Bar

The buzzy one. The Terrace is one of those restaurants that gets the atmosphere just right. Spanish-inspired tapas, excellent cocktails, and a lively energy that makes it feel like you're somewhere much bigger than Ilfracombe. The interior is charming — Klimt prints, warm lighting, and tables close enough together that the buzz is part of the experience.

The food is consistently good across the board. Sharing plates mean you can try a bit of everything, and the wine and cocktail list is well-curated. It's the kind of place where you pop in for a quick bite and end up staying all evening.

Our tip: Go with someone who's happy to share — order five or six plates between two and work through them with a bottle of Albariño. The prawns and the mushrooms are always excellent.

📍 Fore Street, EX34 9DJ — 3 minute walk from FluidHome

3. Giovanni & Luca

The Italian one. A family-run Italian restaurant that's been a local favourite for years. The pizza is proper — thin, crispy, and generous with toppings — and the pasta dishes are comforting and well-executed. It's unpretentious, affordable, and the kind of place you go back to three times in a week without feeling guilty.

The tiramisu is frequently mentioned as one of the best in Devon, which is a bold claim, but it's earned. The atmosphere is warm and friendly in a way that only family-run restaurants manage.

Our tip: Don't overthink it. Get a pizza, get the tiramisu, bring a bottle from the wine list. It's a perfect midweek dinner.

4. Seventy One

The all-day one. A modern, continental-style restaurant that works equally well for a morning coffee, a long lunch, or an evening meal. The interior is bright and contemporary, the menu spans breakfast through to dinner, and the food is reliable across the board.

Seventy One is the kind of place you default to when you can't decide what you want — and you're always glad you did. It's particularly good for lunch: light, fresh dishes with a European sensibility.

Our tip: Good for a lazy brunch if you're not in a rush. Coffee is excellent, and the lunch menu changes with the seasons.

5. S&P Fish Shop

The chippy. Every seaside town needs a great fish and chip shop, and S&P is Ilfracombe's. Fresh fish, properly battered, with chips that are crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. It's consistently good, reasonably priced, and perfectly situated for a harbour-side eat.

There's something unimprovable about eating fish and chips from the paper, sitting on the harbour wall, watching the boats come in. S&P delivers on that simple pleasure better than anywhere else in town.

Our tip: Get it to take away and eat on the harbour. The cod is the classic choice, but ask what's fresh — they sometimes have haddock or plaice that's come straight off the boats that morning.

6. The Pier Brewery Tap & Grill

The casual one. Right on the pier, this is a relaxed spot for a burger, a steak, or a seafood platter with a beer. It's not trying to be fine dining — it's a grill with good ingredients, a solid beer selection, and one of the best locations in town.

The Pier works well for families, for groups who can't agree on what to eat, and for anyone who just wants something unfussy and good in a great setting. The burgers are excellent.

Our tip: Great for a late lunch after exploring the harbour. The terrace seating is the place to be when the sun's out.
