The Best Pubs in Ilfracombe: A Local's Guide (2026)

Ilfracombe has more good pubs per square mile than any town this size has a right to. Here are the ones we actually send our guests to.

Ilfracombe might be a small seaside town, but its pub scene punches well above its weight. From a 14th-century inn with creaking floorboards to a micropub that opened last year, there's a pub here for every mood — whether you want a pint after a coastal walk, a proper Sunday roast, or somewhere to watch the sun go down with a glass of something cold.

We host guests at FluidHome, our holiday apartment in the heart of Ilfracombe, and these are the pubs we recommend to every single one. No filler, no padding — just the ones worth your time.

1. George & Dragon

The historic one. Dating back to around 1360, the George & Dragon is believed to be Ilfracombe's oldest pub — and it feels like it, in the best possible way. Wooden beams, large fireplaces, and the kind of atmosphere you can't fake. It sits on Fore Street just up from the harbour, making it a natural stop after exploring the waterfront.

The food is solid traditional pub fare made with ingredients from their own garden, and they keep three real ales on at all times. Dogs are welcome, and there's seating out front for warmer evenings.

Our tip: Go for a midweek evening when it's quieter and you can actually appreciate the building. The fish dishes are usually the strongest thing on the menu.

2. The Thatched Inn

The one everyone loves. A 17th-century family-run pub tucked up on Hillsborough Road with a sunny beer garden overlooking the valley toward the Bristol Channel. The Thatched Inn is the pub most guests come back and tell us about.

They serve a rotating selection of real ales alongside a menu of honest, well-executed pub food built around locally sourced ingredients. The fish is always fresh and the portions are generous. In winter, their legendary Sunday roast draws people from miles around. Come summer, they switch to "Seafood Sundays" which are equally good.

Our tip: Book ahead for Sunday lunch — it fills up fast. If the weather's good, grab a table in the garden and order whatever the day boat brought in.

3. Hele Bay Pub

The one with the view. Overlooking the pretty cove at Hele Bay, just east of town, this is a family- and dog-friendly pub in a beautiful setting. It's the kind of place where you spend a few hours on the beach, dry off, and wander up for a well-earned pint while the kids run around.

The food menu is classic pub fare done well — burgers, fish and chips, sharing platters — and the drink selection covers real ales, ciders, and a decent wine list. The real draw is the location: sit outside and watch the sea while you eat.

Our tip: Walk the coastal path from Ilfracombe harbour to Hele Bay (about 25 minutes). You earn the pint, and the walk is gorgeous.

📍 39 Beach Road, Hele Bay, EX34 9QZ — 25 minute walk or 5 minute drive from FluidHome

4. The Wellington Arms

The community one. If you want to feel like a local for the evening, the Welly is your pub. It's the heart of Ilfracombe's social scene — real ales, live sport on multiple screens (including outdoor TVs), a large beer garden, a pool table, darts, and live music every weekend.

This isn't a gastropub and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a proper, unpretentious community local where you'll end up chatting to someone at the bar and staying longer than you planned. Families are welcome, dogs are welcome, and the atmosphere is reliably good.

Our tip: Check their social media for live music nights — they get some surprisingly good acts through during the summer season.

📍 High Street, EX34 — 3 minute walk from FluidHome

5. Snug & Hyde

The craft beer one. Ilfracombe's micropub, opened in 2022, has quickly become a local favourite. It's small, it's cosy, and it's focused entirely on great beer and good conversation. No TV, no children, no distractions — just a rotating selection of cask ales (many you won't find anywhere else in North Devon), bottled beers, and ciders.

The atmosphere is unfailingly welcoming, even to strangers. The regulars are friendly, the beer is excellent, and they host regular acoustic music evenings. It's a grown-up pub in the best sense.

Our tip: If you're a real ale drinker, this is the one. The rotating selection means there's always something new. CAMRA named it their local Branch Pub of the Year 2025, which tells you everything.

📍 36 High Street, EX34 9DA — 5 minute walk from FluidHome

6. Prince of Wales

The harbourside one. Sitting on Fore Street close to the harbour, the Prince of Wales is a classic coastal pub with a no-nonsense charm. It's the kind of place you duck into for a quick pint after walking down to see the Verity statue and end up staying for two.

Nothing fancy — just a well-kept pub with friendly staff, reasonable prices, and a great location. There's something about drinking a pint in a pub that's been serving sailors and fishermen for generations.

Our tip: Perfect for a pre-dinner drink if you're eating at one of the restaurants nearby. Keep it simple — a pint and the view.

📍 Fore Street, EX34 — 4 minute walk from FluidHome

7. The Grampus Inn, Lee

The walk-and-pint one. Technically this is in Lee village, not Ilfracombe — but the walk to get there is half the point. Follow the South West Coast Path west from Ilfracombe for about 45 minutes through stunning clifftop scenery, drop down into the gorgeous village of Lee, and reward yourself with a pint at The Grampus.

It's a proper country pub with a warm welcome, good ales, and food that's a step above your average. The village of Lee itself is beautiful — thatched cottages, a sheltered bay for swimming, and the feeling that you've stepped back fifty years.

Our tip: Make an afternoon of it. Walk the coast path to Lee, have lunch at The Grampus, explore the bay, and either walk back or grab a taxi. It's one of the best half-day outings from Ilfracombe.

📍 Lee, EX34 8LR — 45 minute walk along the coast path or 10 minute drive

8. The Sawmills

The cosy one after an adventure. Nestled in Watermouth Valley between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, The Sawmills is an old mill by a stream, surrounded by woodland. It's the kind of pub that feels like a reward — and it is, particularly if you've just scrambled down to Broadsands Beach nearby.

The food is a step above standard pub fare, with daily specials that make the most of local seafood and West Country ingredients. There's a large decking area outside for sunny days and a proper log fire inside for when the weather turns. Dogs are welcome, families are welcome, and the atmosphere is reliably warm and relaxed.

Our tip: Combine it with a trip to Broadsands Beach — one of North Devon's best-kept secrets. Climb back up from the beach, walk five minutes to The Sawmills, and collapse into a pint by the fire. Perfect.

📍 Watermouth Valley, Berrynarbor, EX34 9SJ — 10 minute drive from FluidHome

9. The Admiral Collingwood (Wetherspoons)

The practical one. Look, we know Wetherspoons isn't everyone's idea of a destination pub. But the Collingwood in Ilfracombe is genuinely one of the better ones in the chain. It's a purpose-built pub on the seafront that won a National Pub Design Award when it opened, and the rooftop terrace has some of the best views in town.

They keep a solid range of real ales (many locally brewed), the food is reliable and cheap, and the terrace is a brilliant spot for watching the sunset with a drink. It's also one of the few places open early for breakfast and late into the evening.

Our tip: Ignore the Wetherspoons snobbery. Go to the roof terrace on a warm evening and tell us it's not one of the best spots in Ilfracombe. The views are genuinely spectacular.
